Color Ple

Every summer Wizards of the Coast releases its core Magic set. This year following recent tradition it is named "Magic 2014." Like cars Wizards dates the current core set with the upcoming year. The core sets of magic provides a great gateway for new players to join in on magic. Wizards gears these sets towards the new player by providing cards with simplified mechanics that are often encountered in the game of Magic. They also keep the colors of Magic true to themselves. What this means is that they keep to the color pie. The color pie is a representation of each colors flavor and their relation to one another. Magic has five colors and each color has its own identity, its own feel.  White is the color of law; Blue is the color of the intellect ; Black is the color Selfishness; Red is the color of Action; and Green is the color of Nature.  This Basic flavor of the colors really shows itself in the core set. Let's look at some examples of cards in Magic 2014 that really show off the color pie.

White gives us a sense of law with its ability to stop combat with cards like Pacifism and with heroic creatures like Dawnstrike Paladin.

Blue shows its intellect with its counter spells like Cancel; and its ability to draw cards with Divination and Opportunity.

Black shows its self-centered nature with its ability to straight up kill creatures with cards like Doom Blade and its dealings with Creatures that want to sacrifice like Gnawing Zombie.

Red shows its action with fiery spells like Flames of the Firebrand and Creatures who seek battle like the Regathan Firecat.

Green Shows us its affinity for nature with big creatures like Kalonian Tusker and its ability to find land with cards like Lay of the Land.

This should give you an idea of how the color pie influences what cards each color gets. It would feel strange in green had a card like Opportunity it just doesn't fit within the theme of the color.
